How we verify
The news. And the source.
Every story is checked against its original source: the document, record or statement it rests on. That source is named and linked on the story, along with where the story stands.
Five states
- Verified
- The original source confirms it.
- Developing
- The core event is confirmed; details are still arriving.
- Unverified
- The original source is not yet reachable. We say who is making the claim.
- Disputed
- Original sources contradict each other.
- False
- Checked against the original, which says otherwise.
How a state changes
A story moves up as sources arrive. It never moves down quietly: any downgrade is announced in the story itself, with the date and the reason.
Source lines
Every source line reads: source, document title, date. We never write "according to reports".
Evidence
Up to three dots show how many independent primary sources stand behind a story.
